Galapagos Islands information

Every island in the Galapagos is different one from the other and all this is due to how they were formed. If the 4,600 million years of Earth´s history will be simulated in 24 hours, the Galapagos Islands had been formed in the last two minutes of that day. The 19 islands and 219 islets were created by successive volcanic eruptions over a hot spot located on the seafloor of the Nazca Plate. The first of them emerged in the middle of the Pacific Ocean about 5 million years ago. The islands are settled on the Nazca Plate and move about 5 centimeters a year eastward. That is why the oldest islands of the archipelago are far about 200 kilometers east from the youngest islands that are still above the hot spot.

Diving- Galapagos Island Activities

When is the best time to go diving in the Galapagos? Diving is great year-round and depends on what wildlife you want to see. The warm season (December to May) offers calmer seas and tropical species, while the cold season (June to November) brings nutrient-rich waters and larger animals like hammerhead sharks and whale sharks. Each season offers unique marine encounters.

Can I dive during the cruise? Diving is not offered during the cruise. It is available before or after your cruise with prior reservation and comes at an additional cost.

What marine life can I see while diving? Expect incredible sightings like hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, manta rays, whale sharks (in season), eagle rays, and abundant tropical fish and marine invertebrates.

Where do the diving excursions take place? Depending on availability and conditions, popular dive sites include Gordon Rocks, North Seymour, Kicker Rock, and Floreana. Certified dive professionals lead all excursions.
