Itinerary
Day 1: Quito – Otavalo – Cuicocha – Magdalena
AM
Depart from Quito and head north to the city of Ibarra. Continue to Otavalo, where you’ll stroll through South America’s most famous craft market. Engage with local artisans, admire handmade goods, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere of this bustling market.
Next, visit Cuicocha Lake, a stunning crater lake that many believe to be named “Rainbow Lake”. However, most locals prefer the name “Lake of Guinea Pigs” due to the shape of the largest island in the middle. The scenic beauty of the lake, set against the backdrop of the Andean highlands, makes for a perfect photo stop. Learn about the cultural significance of the lake for the local indigenous community.
PM
Head towards the Karanki-Magdalena community, nestled at the foothills of the Imbabura volcano. Experience the stunning landscape through a bike or horseback ride while enjoying the beautiful patchwork of agricultural fields. Take part in a traditional cooking lesson, learning local gastronomy and harvesting techniques from the community members.
*Overnight in the community.
Day 2: Magdalena – Peguche – Quito
AM
In the morning, explore more of the Magdalena community and its surrounding landscapes before making your way to the village of Peguche. Known for traditional weaving and Andean wind instruments, Peguche offers a unique insight into Ecuador’s rich artisan culture.
