ITINERARY
Day 1 – Gualaceo - Chordeleg - Cuenca
We will depart and drive from Cuenca for a one-hour journey to the picturesque valley of the village of Gualaceo.
Gualaceo is a very typical Andean village, with charming cobblestone streets, a lovely central plaza, and an interesting main church. This town is the cradle of enterprising people and skilled artisans, with shoemaking and the production of ikat weaves being the two most important economic activities.
In the town center, high-quality shoes in various styles are sold in numerous shops. In the surrounding areas—particularly in the Bulcay and Bulzhún sectors—several families offer the chance to witness firsthand the fascinating ikat technique (one of the most complex and beautiful weaving and dyeing methods in the world).
In their workshops, traditional makanas (shawls) and other colorful garments are crafted, highly appreciated by both local and international travelers.
We will then continue to Chordeleg, a town renowned for its silver and gold jewelry. In the cantonal center, the many jewelry stores capture the attention of every visitor.
You’ll find a wide range of designs and prices, with the most iconic pieces created using the traditional filigree technique. Around the picturesque José María Vargas square, you’ll also discover shops offering local crafts.
After this visit, we’ll return to Cuenca.
Your day ends wandering through the cobbled streets of Cuenca, a UNESCO World Heritage Site celebrated for its perfectly preserved colonial architecture. You'll visit the iconic Cathedral, explore the Main Square and the lively flower market, and step inside the historic San Francisco and Santo Domingo churches. At the Central Bank Museum, uncover centuries of Ecuadorian heritage through archaeological relics, artistic treasures, and striking historical photography.
Besides Panama hats, these artisans produce a wide variety of goods made from the same toquilla straw, so you can purchase beautiful crafts directly from the producers.
Lunch is not included in the tour; however, our guide will be happy to recommend excellent local options.
