Colonial Quito - Middle of the World
AM
Declared UNESCO’s first World Cultural Heritage site in 1978, Quito boasts the largest colonial town in the Americas. Marvel at the gothic “Basilica del Voto Nacional”, Plaza de la independencia, and the Presidential and Archbishop’s palaces from the 17th and 19th centuries. Stroll to the Metropolitan Cathedral, visit the street of the Seven Crosses, and admire El Sagrario church.
Discover La Compañia de Jesús, the baroque masterpiece of colonial architecture, and continue to San Francisco Plaza, showcasing a wealth of artistic and cultural heritage.
PM
After a traditional Ecuadorian lunch, we traveled 11 miles north of the city to the Middle of the World Complex. Here, at 0°0’00” latitude, is the Equator Monument. Constructed in the eighteenth century by the French Geodesic Expedition, one of the three pyramids marks the middle of the Earth. The complex replicates Spanish colonial architecture, with a central plaza, a church, and a bullfighting ring.
